Posted by Kiern Walker on

So, you're ready to ditch the pavement and embrace the call of the wild? Trail running offers a unique experience, combining the fitness benefits of running with the serenity and beauty of nature. But before you lace up your shoes and hit the trails, here's a quick guide to get you started:

1.      Choosing the right running gear:

Shoes: trail running shoes are designed with grippy soles to tackle uneven terrain. Look for shoes with good traction, water resistance, and ankle support.

Apparel: opt for running clothes with fabrics that will keep you comfortable and dry, such as waterproof jackets or hats. Additionally, pack layers which can be folded away to adjust to changing weather conditions. Don't forget a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen if the weather is warmer!

Navigation: a map, compass, or GPS device is essential, especially if you're venturing off-trail. Consider downloading a trail-running app with offline maps.

2.      Trail running essentials:

Carry trail running essentials in a small bag or running belt. Carry enough water to stay hydrated, and pack energy bars, gels or snacks for fuel during your run. Include essentials such as pain relief and plasters in case of emergencies.

3.      Trail running techniques:

Make sure to avoid tripping over rocks or roots by watching your footing, keep balance and momentum by using your arms and focus on deep breathing to maintain a steady pace.

4.      Safety first:

Make sure to let someone know your route or your expected return time. Be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for wildlife, such as animals or plants that could cause harm. If you are new to running cross country, bring a friend with you to help you pace yourself and stay safer.

5.      Embrace the adventure:

With the right kit, trail running can be a rewarding experience that offers a unique sense of freedom and connection with nature. So, get out there, explore the trails, and stay outdoors longer!
